There are beliefs that serve us at different stages of our lives, and then later dissolve or fade, to be replaced by others. There are beliefs that serve each cycle and generation only to evolve into new convictions that fit with the changing mores of the time. At any moment in our lives, old beliefs are being challenged by new thoughts and ideas. This is how we change, this is how we evolve.
But change does not happen automatically. The ability to see the usefulness of a new idea requires openness and discernment. We need to value truth over our investment in what we presently perceive to be true. Inevitably, this means facing a variety of fears: fear of change, fear of letting go of the past, fear of loss. Hickory provides strength and inner alignment with truth-knowing that eases these fears and provides a courage to value what is true over what has been previously believed.
Coincidentally, the Native Americans used this tree both as an emetic (letting go) and for arthritic conditions (softening). The essence can be used to address any hardening of tissue, especially when there is rigidity in the personality which resists positive change.
